Saw a new client this morning, this is how he conversation went:
Me: “What is it you think you need?”
Client: “I don’t know I just want to get to where I need to be, faster and XXX said you could help” (it was from a referral)
Me: “And where do you need to be?”
Client: “Rich and retired!”
Me: “Is that all? ? So you have an end goal in mind in terms of time and profitability – do you have a strategy, do you know how you are getting there?”
Client: “I just figured it would happen to be honest but I’ve been thinking that for the past 4.5 years. Never really understood the point of a rigid strategy sounds time consuming and I don’t have time as it is”
Me: “Ok. Stay with me on this one, imagine you are in the middle of the ocean on a boat you built yourself.
You have no idea where you are going but you know where you are right now and your boat is keeping you afloat.
You have 2 choices.
Either you vibe it out and take a chance and see if you end up somewhere safe where you can have a future but you risk the boat being destroyed by unpredicted storms or getting hijacked by pirates.
You take a route that you know has manageable weather, predictable encounters, you have a plan of action and tools for any risky situations and a destination only some can dream of.
Which would you choose?”
Client: “I see what you did there” she said “What’s your day rate?”
….I think a lot of people think strategies are sometimes rigid, overthought documents that live in a cupboard and tick a box.
Not on my watch.
