Over the years I’ve learned a lot about attitude and positivity, more so in the last 5.
I am a great observer so have watched the rise and fall of many business people.
I would say the single thing that differentiates the weak from the strong is mindset.
To have a positive mindset takes a lot of bloody practice. You can’t just read a self help book and hey presto, there you go Mr/Mrs Positive pants is born.
I managed a guy once who was very much in to NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and felt like everything was positive. Even when he was on a written warning and was sat there with his train tickets to get home, nope…still positive.
I personally thought this was a bit much – no one can be positive 100% all of the time. However, some of the coping tools and mindset tricks really do make a difference to any outcome.
So you don’t have to go as far as ‘NLP guy’ but I promise you, changing your mindset can change your life.
I’m now a qualified CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) therapist too because I came across loads of business people struggling to get over ‘failure’ or not hitting targets. There are so many parallels in CBT and business it’s insane.
I’ve done coaching and mentoring too but didn’t want to go down the performance coach road because I think it sounds a bit wishy washy but that’s also what I do.
When your best sales person is struggling, how do you help them? How do you reduce the pressure they’ve put on themselves and their families? How do you get them to move on for next month?
How do you get your worst performing person up to the top? How do you truly motivate an enthusiastic beginner or a lost learner?
I’ll tell you how. Mindset.
Of course, this needs to be coupled with ability but I’m hoping that you wouldn’t have employed them in the first place if the ability wasn’t there.
